Jeffrey Alan Jewett,
born in San Diego, Ca, began drawing and painting at the age of 9. He continued through school always focused on drawing and painting, winning many
awards and having his work published in literary art magazines. Jeff’s early art influences came from Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, M.C. Escher, and Joan Miro.
In 1990, Jeffrey moved to Mariposa, Ca. Jeff’s father Bill Jewett was an avid “rock-hound” and introduced Jeff to the world of gems and minerals. Inspired by the beauty of stones, Jeff began using his father’s lapidary equipment, polishing and shaping stones. Making stone eggs, pyramids, and small animal fetishes, the 3 dimensional world of art came into view for him.
Jeff wanted to work in a larger stone medium that did not require the use of heavy lapidary equipment. Jeff went to a stone yard where he realized after witnessing the possibilities of working with soapstone that he had finally found his medium. Jeff immediately started sculpting larger pieces in soapstone inspired by Native American imagery, sculpting birds, such as, a Peregrine Falcon, Golden Eagle, Ravens and Crows as well as Mountain Lions, Fox, Bears, and Wolves. These early pieces reflected his interest in animal totems and Earth based Spirituality.
Jeff’s desire to keep growing, learning, and changing have led him to study many of the world’s religions with a special focus on Buddhism and Hinduism. He has traveled to Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia to view the many temples and cities filled with ancient sculpture and architecture. The wealth of art and symbolism from Asia is a constant source of inspiration for Jeff.
The last few years have introduced Jeff’s great love of abstract art and use of different stones. His latest works “Aurelia” and “Fragment” are carved from Alabaster and Basalt Columns. Jeff Jewett’s work is exclusively shown at Adrianne’s Ethnic, World, and Tribal Gallery in Oakhurst, CA.
Spending much time in reflective contemplation, Jeff draws from a deep well of inspiration that speaks through stone and his quiet spirit.
